Description
Vamana is the fifth incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu. In the Rigveda, Vishnu measured the three worlds with three strides. Vamana, appearing as a dwarf, approached demon king Bali during a time of gods' power loss. Bali granted Vamana a request for as much land as he could cover in three paces. Vamana, assuming a giant form, covered the earth and midworld in two steps. With nowhere left to go, Bali suggested placing the third step on his head, leading to his descent to rule the netherworld. Vamana is often identified as Trivikrama, depicted with one foot on earth and the other lifted as if taking a stride.
